Julianos RAW.
On our recent trip to L.A. we decided to go to one of the main sources for raw foods.
Julianos RAW restaurant. It took a bit of driving around but we finally found it as the location was in plain sight on the corner of Broadway and 6th St. in Santa Monica. We eagerly ran in the door and were greeted by the nicest host, who asked us to sit anywhere we would like.
We were also pleased that our protagonist was really there and just smiled as we sat down.
Our waitress informed us that we should try the desserts first as they were easier to digest than the main dishes and that it would prepare our palate for what was to come.
One of our friends was not feeling so good so she just ordered a dessert a apple tort whom we all shared when it arrived. My other friend ordered a strawberry cheesecake and I ordered the chocolate one. Well, needless to say all desserts were heavenly as we expected I ordered a white wine and my Ill friend a mint and ginger tea. which was very cool as it was all done up fresh with the leaves and ginger still in the cup. My other friend ordered a lemonade which she said reminded her of her grandmothers many years ago.
My well friend ordered the Lasagna and I ordered the Burger. We also ordered the sushi as an appetizer. As we all tasted each others food we laughed at the synchronicity as we had commented on what the food would actually taste like in real life. The Lasagna was pretty close to our italian friends taste but crunchier and slightly cooler than the piping hot stuff we were used to. It still had al the flavor we expected though. Maybe even a bit more herby and fresh. My burger was quite a delight from the "fresh" taste I was used to at In and Out burger years ago. It was light but not all that together as I expected. I was hoping to just grab it and bit into to all of it. However it was a nice change as it seemed like an open faced sandwich instead. As I picked at all the ingredients they all seemed to blend very very well. Not one ingredient was out of place. It really did seem like someone put quite a lot of thought, palate work, love and energy into it.
And the sushi. Not just a glorified sea wrap. but a decadent blend of color and taste. it seemed more like a Thai taste though as the dip was excellent bit reminded me of hints of peanut sauce and spiciness. I almost licked up the the little dip cup as I threw everything in there to blend the tastes.
After we were finished we thanked the very informative waitress for her added info on the ingredients and preparation of our food.
We each bought Juliano's book Raw and were delighted as he autographed it for us with a broad "Do Yoga" comment above our names. Since we were all Yoga aficionados we thanked everyone as we left with our stomaches more than fulfilled.
We definitely recommend going to this fine dining experience and also would like to add that Juliano has monthly classes on food preparation the first Saturday of the month.
We only wish we had a place like this in Playa..
